The Male Anatomy Introduction
The male reproductive system includes the following structures:

Penis
Scrotum
Testes (testicles)
Vas deferens
Seminal vesicles
Prostate gland
Urethra
Penis
The penis consists of three main parts: the root, the body, and the glans penis. The root is attached to the abdominal and pelvic wall. The body is the middle portion. The body of the penis consists of three cylindrical spaces of soft tissue. When the two larger spaces fill with blood, the penis becomes large and rigid, forming an erection.

Two larger cylindrical spaces of soft tissue, called the corpora cavernosa, are located side by side and form the bulk of the penis. The third cylindrical space of soft tissue, called the corpus spongiosum, surrounds the urethra, which forms the urinary passage. The glans penis is the cone-shaped end or head of the penis, which is the termination of the corpus spongiosum. The small ridge that separates the glans penis from the shaft or body of the penis is called the corona.
Scrotum
The scrotum is a thin sac of skin and thin muscle in which lie the testicles. The scrotum acts as a climate control system, allowing the testicles to be slightly away from the rest of the body and keeping them slightly cooler than normal body temperature for optimal sperm development. The muscles in the scrotum, called the cremasteric muscles, move the testicles slightly within the scrotum depending on the surrounding temperature.

Testes/Testicles
The testes (or testicles) are two olive-sized oval bodies, one on the right side and one on the left side. The testes have two main functions: to produce sperm (the male sex cell) and to produce testosterone (the male sex hormone). The epididymides and the vasa deferentia are attached to the testicles and are important in transporting sperm cells after they develop in the testes.

The term testicles includes the testes as well as the surrounding structures, such as the vas deferens and the epididymis. These two names, testes and testicles, are often used interchangeably even though their definitions are slightly different.
Vas Deferens and Seminal Vesicles
Once sperm are produced, they travel through a collection area, called the epididymis, and then through a tube or duct, called the vas deferens, which then joins the seminal vesicles to form the ejaculatory duct. The seminal vesicles produce a fluid that provides nutrients for the sperm and lubricates the urethra. This fluid mixes with other fluids to create the semen.

During ejaculation, muscles surrounding the seminal vesicles contract and push out the sperm and the fluid from the seminal vesicles, much like squeezing a tube of toothpaste. The seminal vesicles are located behind the prostate and the bladder.

Prostate Gland
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that lies below the urinary bladder and surrounds the urethra. Along with the seminal vesicles, the prostate gland produces a fluid, called prostatic fluid, that contains, protects, nourishes, and supports the sperm. The white, sticky fluid originally from the prostate forms most of the volume of the semen. The prostate has no known function other than reproduction.

The prostate grows throughout life. This growth often causes a blockage in the urethra that affects voiding with such symptoms as urinary frequency, excessive voiding at night (nocturia), urgency of urination, and weakening of the urinary stream. This enlargement of the prostate, called benign prostatic hyperplasia (or BPH), can be treated with medication or various surgical procedures, such as laser or microwave therapy.

The prostate is also the source of a prostate specific antigen (or PSA) that is used as a blood test to detect prostate cancer.

Urethra
The urethra is surrounded by the corpus spongiosum, one of the cylindrical spaces of soft tissue of the penis described earlier. In men, the urethra provides a dual purpose: to transport urine from the bladder and to transport the semen (sperm cells and fluid from the seminal vesicles and the prostate) out the tip of the penis. Scar tissue in this passage, called strictures, can cause urinary difficulty

These medications are included in a family of medications called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5,Levitra Information) inhibitors. In their review, the authors analyzed eight studies of 1,759 men that compared Cialis, Levitra or Viagra to placebo. Eighty percent of the men in these studies had type 2 diabetes, while 20 percent had type 1 diabetes. Most of the studies lasted for 12 weeks. At the end of the studies, men who took one of the PDE-5 inhibitors showed improvements on all measures of erectile dysfunction, and the medications caused few adverse reactions, according to the review. Men who took the medications were 4.8 times more likely to have an adverse reaction than men who took a placebo. The most common side effects among men who took the medications were headache, flushing, and upper respiratory tract complaints and flu-like symptoms. There were no deaths.

“The results of our meta-analysis are not surprising, but give strength to the general notion that this class of medications is efficient and safe for this specific wide population,” review lead author Dr. Moshe Vardi, of the internal medicine division at Lady Davis Carmel Medical Center in Israel, said in a prepared statement (Levitra Information). PDE-5 inhibitors have been considered the mainstay of treatment for erectile dysfunction in the general population for many years. Diabetics are prone to this complication, and the etiology of their erectile dysfunction is multifactorial, thus making their treatment a special challenge for physicians and other health care professionals.

On April 6, the FDA approved safety labeling revisions for vardenafil - levitra (Levitra tablets, made by Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corp, levitra information) to advise of drug interactions and the additive effect on QT interval prolongation associated with concomitant use of certain medications. Because vardenafil - levitra is metabolized predominantly by the hepatic enzyme cytochrome P450 isoenzyme 3A4 (CYP3A4,levitra information), serum levels can be significantly increased by concomitant use of indinavir, saquinavir, atazanavir, or other potent CYP3A4 inhibitors, such as clarithromycin, ketoconazole 400 mg daily, or itraconazole 400 mg daily. This can lead to an increased risk for adverse events such as hypotension, visual changes, and priapism.

Therefore, patients receiving treatment with these drugs or regimens should not exceed a dose of 2.5 mg vardenafil - levitra within a 24-hour period. For patients taking ketoconazole or itraconazole 200 mg daily, the vardenafil - levitra dose should not exceed 5 mg within a 24-hour period. The FDA notes that though the specific interactions have not been studied, other CYP3A4 inhibitors (eg, grapefruit juice, levitra information) are also likely to increase vardenafil - levitra exposure.

The agency also warned of the risk for an additive effect on QT interval prolongation with concomitant use of other drugs known to exert this effect, as determined by data from a postmarketing study. A previous study of healthy men (n = 59) had revealed that the effect of 10 mg of vardenafil - levitra is similar to that of 400 mg of moxifloxacin.

These observations should be considered in clinical decisions when prescribing vardenafil - levitra for patients with a known history of QT prolongation or those taking medications known to prolong the QT interval. Patients taking class 1A (eg, quinidine, procainamide, levitra information) or class III (eg, amiodarone, sotalol, levitra information) antiarrhythmic medications or those with congenital QT prolongation should avoid using vardenafil - levitra.

vardenafil - levitra is indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The recommended daily starting dose for most patients is 10 mg taken approximately 1 hour before sexual activity and then lowered to 5 mg or increased to a maximum of 20 mg based on efficacy and adverse events.
